Cousins are all about being related to a set of grandparents. If only one of the grandparents is shared then they would be half cousins.

Removed is all about the distance between generations.

EXAMPLES:

  • If we share the same grandparents then we are 1st cousins and belong to the same generation, thus there is no "removed".
  • If my grandparents are your great, great-grandparents, then we are 1st cousin, 2x removed.
  • If we do not share the same grandparents, but we do share the same great-grandparents, then we are 2nd cousins.
  • The anchor point is not always you.
    • If my grandparents are your great-grandparents then we are 1st cousin, 1x removed with me as the older generation.
    • If your grand parents are my great grandparents then we are 1st cousin, 1x removed with me as the younger gneration.
